Nurul Izzah to head TVET reform committee

Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar will head a committee overseeing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) curriculum reforms, announced Education Minister Maszlee Malik today.
"Nurul Izzah is someone who cares greatly about TVET and she has discussed with me how it is able to help youth obtain job opportunities as well as to become entrepreneurs.
"The Pakatan Harapan government is aware of the importance of the technical and vocational stream, as mentioned in Harapan’s (election) manifesto.
"We are committed to empowering this stream to make it truly on par with other education streams, no longer as a second option," Maszlee added as he read from a statement at a press conference at the Education Ministry in Putrajaya today.
Nurul Izzah was also present at the press conference.
On a separate issue, Maszlee announced that lecturers at public universities will from now no longer be asked to undertake revenue-raising duties.
“Lecturers will no longer be allowed to be given tasks to raise revenue for universities.
“University financial departments should take the lead role in doing this, not academic staff. Appointees who fail to raise revenue for universities should be replaced with more capable people,” he said.
Maszlee, who is Simpang Renggam MP, also announced that the present Integrated Cumulative Grade Point Average (iCGPA) system being used to grade students at public tertiary institutions will now be optional.
“Effective from today, the iCGPA programme is no longer compulsory for public universities.
“If universities want to continue with it, the decision needs to made with the consensus of all academic staff after holding discussions and consultations.
“If universities want to stop it, leftover funds from the programme will be channelled to university libraries for subscriptions to reputable international journals,” he told the same press conference.
English priority
This, he hoped, would enable teaching staff to focus their time on lecturing rather than assessing student performance.
The decision was made following complaints about the grading system received in consultations with stakeholders, Maszlee added.
The education minister also urged public universities to improve on the quality of their English-language publications.
“It is my intent as education minister that from 2018, writings by local academics will be used all over the world, increasing the prestige of our public universities in the eyes of the world,” he said. - Mkini
