Gov't gives 'two-faced' uni VCs chance to 'resign honourably'

The vice-chancellors of public universities who are not aligned with the current government will be given the chance to resign honourably, Education Minister Maszlee Malik said.
Maszlee says he has met these vice-chancellors and their deputies in private and hoped they would resign voluntarily.
He cited a cabinet decision prior to Hari Raya Aidilfitri that politically appointed government-linked company bosses and directors would be replaced.
"The prime minister (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) has also said that top civil servants that are not aligned with the government of the day will be asked to step down due to concerns that they will stymie efforts by the government, especially in fulfilling our manifesto.
"Those (vice-chancellors) still in service, we give them a choice (to resign) because there is a record of them in the mass media prior to the election, questioning the age of the prime minister and the capabilities of the current government.
"But when the clock struck midnight, they changed (their views). We don't want people who are two-faced. We are offering them the chance to step down with honour," Maszlee told a press conference in Putrajaya today.
He also assured that future vice-chancellors would not be appointed based on party membership and that universities would be free from politics.

It is not clear when Mahathir said that top civil servants not aligned with the government would be replaced.
Mahathir, however, has questioned the loyalty of civil servants that openly campaigned for BN in the last general election.
