Lawyers representing PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli will send a letter of representation to the Attorney-General's Chambers regarding his criminal defamation charge over a Facebook posting allegedly tarnishing Tabung Haji's image three years ago.
Rafizi's lawyer Nik Zarith Nik Moustpha told this to the Magistrate's Court in Kuala Lumpur before being given the dates to file the submission at the end of the prosecution's case.
This is the first time Rafizi will file a letter of representation to new attorney-general Tommy Thomas for the chambers to consider dropping the charge, he said.
Meanwhile, magistrate Umzarul An-Nur fixed July 30 for the parties to file their submissions.
The magistrate also set Aug 28 to deliver her decision on whether to order Rafizi to enter his defence.
Rafizi was charged in 2016 for posting an article titled "Analisa Kewangan Tabung Haji 2009-2015" on his Facebook. His posting was spotted by a Tabung Haji official on the 18th floor of Tabung Haji, Jalan Tun Razak on Feb 18, 2016.
The former Pandan MP was charged under Section 500 of the Penal Code where he faces two years jail or fine or both, if convicted.
He had already been convicted but let off with a two-year good behaviour bond of RM10,000 by the Court of Appeal earlier this month, for possessing and exposing details of the then confidential 1MDB audit report at a press conference in Parliament on March 24, 2016.
He was then charged under the Official Secrets Act 1972.
Rafizi was also convicted by the Shah Alam Sessions Court earlier this year and sentenced to 30 months jail for violating the Banking and Financial Institutions Act 1989 for exposing accounts related to the National Feedlot Corporation Sdn Bhd and its chairperson Mohd Salleh Ismail. -Mkini
