Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today announced that Malaysia will soon adopt a single system to handle all matters related to the hiring of foreign workers, regardless of their countries of origin.
As part of the process, Mahathir said the government will set up an independent committee to study policies related to the overall management of migrant workers in Malaysia.
"Foreign workers have become a very big problem for us because too many of them have come into the country illegally and this needs to be addressed," said Mahathir during a press conference at the Parliament building.
He earlier chaired a special committee meeting on management of foreign workers in Malaysia.
Mahathir added that the government has also initiated discussions with counterparts in Bangladesh to open up recruitment channels for their citizens to work here.
"We found that there were only 10 agents in Bangladesh approved to process the necessary documents for their workers to come here.
"This situation has created a monopoly where agents (in Bangladesh) were found to have charged up to RM20,000 (per worker)," he said.
As a proposed solution, Mahathir said discussions are ongoing to dismantle the monopoly and free up competition among private agencies.
"Let them have a competition among themselves," he added.
At the ministerial level, Mahathir said a joint committee comprising officials from the Home Ministry and the Human Resource Ministry will oversee the overall process to manage recruitment and placement of migrant workers here. - Mkini
