Rafizi: Excuse given was minister's aide 'crowdfunded' RM800k

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli has shed more light regarding the case involving an aide to Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu.
The former Pandan MP claimed he was told that the sum used to settle the aide's bankrupt status came from a "crowdfunding" initiative.
However, Rafizi, who was provided with documents on the payments amounting to over RM800,000, said the excuse was unacceptable.
He said the documents indicated the aide allegedly received four "suspicious" payments amounting to RM318,525; RM100,000; RM300,000; and RM100,800 each in two days - May 30 to 31, 2018.
"The excuse which has reached me is that the money is the result of 'crowdfunding' carried out to clear the officer from bankrupt status.
"I find the excuse hard to accept as I know another person, an Amanah leader... who still has not been able to collect the funds needed to pay off his fine, even though he is more famous than Mohamad Sabu's aide," he added in a statement this afternoon.
Rafizi was responding to a Malaysiakini report yesterday that Mohamad's aide was being investigated in connection with several parties settling the latter's debts amounting to RM800,000.
Sources claimed that the aide had been declared bankrupt by the Insolvency Department about four years ago but his debt was settled just a few days after Mohamad was sworn in as defence minister.
MACC is investigating whether the debts were settled with the intention to secure projects in return.
Earlier today, Mohamad said he would not compromise on integrity and welcomed the MACC investigation.
Pledging full cooperation, the minister said his aide should be hauled to court if there was sufficient evidence. -Mkini
