‘WE DON’T WANT THEM TO HAVE THE POWER TO CONTROL’: AFTER GROSS ABUSE, ROS TO BE STRIPPED OF AUTHORITY TO REGISTER POLITICAL PARTIES?

THE registration of political parties should not fall under the purview of the Registrar of Societies (RoS), said Election Reforms Committee chairman Abdul Rashid Abd Rahman.

The function should instead come under the Election Commission (EC), he told reporters today.

“When they have the power to register, they will also have the power to control.  

“So, we are looking into this. There is a possibility we will take away the power from the RoS,” said Rashid.

He said the move was part of a larger plan to draft better and more suitable laws to register and monitor political bodies or parties qualified to participate in elections or activities related to it.
