BUSINESSMAN Vincent Tan today pledged RM500,000 to a fund which he says can be set up to buy the land on which the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple is sited, The Star reported.
The tycoon said that would be the best way to ensure the temple remains there.
“The public can buy the land, pay off the developer and let the temple stay. It will be difficult to expect the Selangor state government to buy the land,” he was quoted as saying.
Another businessman, Barry Goh also pledged RM500,000 to the fund.
Goh previously headed MCT Bhd until it was taken over by Ayala Corporation from the Philippines, the ultimate owners of the land.
The temple land of 0.45ha is said to be valued between RM14.37 million and RM15.33 million.
Tan was also reported as saying that he will seek support from others for the proposal, saying he will provide more details and the support mechanism.
He said he would also use social media to get crowdfunding for the proposed exercise.
On Monday, a riot erupted about 2.30am at the temple compound and at the One City shopping centre the following day, stirred by the relocation of the temple.
A firefighter was critically injured in the incident and is being treated at the National Heart Institute.
So far, 42 individuals have been arrested to facilitate police investigations.
