Don’t make provocative statements, Muhyiddin warns anti-ICERD rally participants

KUALA LUMPUR: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has reminded those attending the mega rally to oppose the ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) to refrain from making provocative statements.
The Home Minister said that although Malaysia is a democratic country, all parties must obey and respect the law.
"As far as we are concerned, if they follow the rules and law under the Peaceful Assembly Act, and make sure that the rally is well organised as what is required under the law, that is fine.
"So far, the police will just be observing to make sure nothing unwarranted happens," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby on Monday (Nov 19).
A mega gathering organised by Opposition parties Umno and PAS to oppose ICERD is set to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 8.
"What we want to say here is don't make provocative statements or create other problems," said Muhyiddin.
Asked if the organisers had submitted an application for the rally, Muhyiddin said that there are certain provisions under the Peaceful Assembly Act that required the organisers to do so.
"I do not have to repeat that, they have to follow the rule of law," he said.
"As far as we are concerned, we are always open because this is a democratic country.
"So far, everything is under control," said Muhyiddin.- Star
