PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has denied the allegation by DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang that the former had sought to be named prime minister candidate for the then opposition bloc back in 2013.
Taking to Facebook, Hadi denied ever declaring himself prime minister-designate, nor his party ever nominating him for the role.
"As far as I remember, PAS never nominated me to be prime minister, nor did I declare myself to be prime minister-designate.
"Mungkin Saudara Lim lebih kuat ingatannya, atau lebih tinggi andaiannya (Maybe Lim has a better memory, or made a better assumption)," the PAS leader said in his social media post today.
His response comes a day after the veteran DAP politician alleged that PAS' bid to label DAP as anti-Malay and anti-Islam had stemmed from disappointment after failing to get Lim's party backing for Hadi to be prime minister-designate during the 13th general election.
"The reason why PAS president Hadi Awang and other PAS leaders are telling lies about the DAP being anti-Malay and anti-Islam was because DAP had refused to support Hadi as the prime minister candidate for Pakatan Rakyat in the 13th general election in 2013.
"Before the 13th general election, Hadi, through the PAS leadership, had approached me to broach the subject of a prime ministerial-designate, on the ground that Anwar Ibrahim was not a suitable candidate.
"[...] It is because DAP refused to support Hadi as prime ministerial candidate that he is now telling lies about the DAP being anti-Malay and anti-Islam," Lim had claimed in a statement last night.
At the time, PAS was a member of the opposition coalition bloc Pakatan Rakyat, Pakatan Harapan's predecessor. Pakatan Rakyat fell apart in 2015 amidst differences between PAS and DAP over the hudud issue.
Lim’s claim of Hadi’s intention to be prime minister was made before, in 2016, with the DAP veteran asserting then that DAP and PKR would not support the proposal.
Lim had also said that this was the reason why Hadi would side with Umno even if it meant turning a blind eye to then Umno president Najib Abdul Razak’s alleged wrongdoings.
In his statement yesterday, however, Lim said prior to GE13, PAS leaders had initially suggested veteran Umno politician Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah as a suitable premier candidate instead of PKR leader Anwar.
PAS later "dropped the subject" when DAP held its stance in supporting Anwar as for the role and when DAP did not suggest Hadi instead, Lim claimed. - Mkini
