GEORGE TOWN: The sports utility vehicle (SUV) which plunged into the sea following an accident at KM4 of the Penang Bridge early Sunday morning, was winched out of the water this evening after an operation lasting more than two days.
The remains of the driver appeared to be in the car.
What appeared to be a foot and an arm could be seen on the driver’s side of the dashboard and on the door frame respectively.
The search and recovery (SAR) team lifted the white SUV out of the sea after battling strong winds and strong currents at 6.06pm.
The Mazda CX-5, believed to be driven by Moey Yun Peng, 20, a college student from Taman Kempas in Butterworth, had plunged off the bridge into the sea after it was hit by another car at 2.54am on Sunday.
The car, located some 15m underwater at Pier 34 of the bridge at about 4pm yesterday, was hoisted on to the bridge before being put on a trailer.
Its glass was smashed and all the airbags appeared to have been inflated because of the impact.
An ambulance was on standby at the scene.
More than 140 people took part in the SAR operation. -FMT
