Here is a 25 minute You Tube video that is useful to understand the 'real' causes behind the Sunni Shia conflict. Contrary to what many millions of Muslims think, it is NOT a thousand year old conflict.
In a previous post I did mention that it is very doubtful that the 'alleged' Battle of Siffin between the forces of Ali and the forces of the Muawiyah even took place [1400 years ago]. That was supposed to be the 'seminal' event that sparked the Sunni Shia conflict.
The Sunni Shia conflict is actually more recent - well it goes back to the 14th Century - and it was a political struggle for influence between the Persian Safavid Dynasty [Shia] and the Sunni Ottoman 'Caliphate'.
Both the Ottomans and the Safavids manipulated religion to stir their masses and their soldiers into a religious frenzy to go to war with each other.
It was actually a clever ruse to preserve the political position of the ruling classes. Just like it is happening today between the Saudis, Iranians, Yemenis, Salafis, Shias all over the Islamic world.
History does repeat itself. If you have 25 minutes, this video is an education.
