Malaysia’s online hiring up 16%, led by IT and ISP sectors

Monster.com says the hiring mood has picked up as reflected in the Monster Employment Index for the first quarter of this year.
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s online hiring activity registered a spike of 16% at the end of the first quarter this year, according to the latest Monster Employment Index (MEI).
The recruitment platform Monster.com said this came on the back of the steepest annual online employment growth in the IT, telecoms/internet service providers, and business process outsourcing/IT enabled services industries.
The job roles with highest demand on-the-year were software, hardware and telecoms, according to the MEI.
The hospitality industry, however, took a plunge, registering a 5% decline year-on-year.
The MEI is a gauge of online job posting activity compiled monthly by Monster.com.
It records the industries and occupations that show the highest and lowest growth in recruitment activity in the Asia-Pacific region.
Monster.com said the annual industry trends in Malaysia showed that online recruitment activity surpassed the corresponding period from the first quarter of 2018 in eight of the nine industry sectors monitored by the index.
IT, telecoms/internet service providers, and business process outsourcing/IT enabled services recorded the most notable annual growth of 60% among the sectors in March.
The sectors witnessed a sharp rise in demand as compared to the corresponding period from 2018, indicating that there is now more movement within the job market.
The retail sector witnessed significant growth for the first time since September 2015, with year-on-year growth of 45%.
For the six months from September 2018 to March this year, the sector registered a growth of 49%, the steepest among others.
Online recruitment activity in advertising, market research, public relations, media and entertainment recovered with a YoY growth of 14%, following a downtrend trend that had been ongoing since April 2016.
Another sector that has seen an uptrend is production/manufacturing, automotive and ancillary with a 9% increase.
E-recruitment activity in oil and gas eased from 11% in February to 5% in March but still recorded an overall 1% increase in the first quarter.
“Although the Malaysian economy had a slow start earlier on in the first quarter of 2019, the economic growth forecast is now at 4.9% YoY and it seems it will continue to expand at a steady and promising pace,” said Abhijeet Mukherjee, CEO of Monster.com for Asia-Pacific and the Middle East.
“Because of this, the hiring mood has picked up and has shown a significant increase at the end of the first quarter.
“The economy is well on its way to making its economic growth target for 2019.”
Abhijit said he foresees this positive annual growth in online hiring will continue in the months to come.
“Large organisations and SMEs will have a growing need for skilled software, hardware and telco professionals, especially since digital disruption is a key factor in successful business innovation,” he said.
The MEI for Malaysia covers a large representative selection of career websites and online job listings across the country. - FMT
