Ambiga ticks off KL lawmakers for defending developers instead of the people

Former Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenevasan (above) today ticked off Kuala Lumpur lawmakers for not standing up against developers.
She said it was disheartening that the Pakatan Harapan-led government was not putting a stop to overdevelopment of malls and offices in the capital.
"Stop being apologists for the developers. MPs and ministers can't be apologists for private interests; you represent public interests.
"We (residents) appeal to the Kuala Lumpur MPs to ensure that this overdevelopment in KL stops," she said.
Ambiga was speaking at a press conference in Petaling Jaya together with Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh, over the controversial Taman Rimba Kiara development project.
She said there were other such projects in Kuala Lumpur that the Harapan government must pay attention to.
She said they should not be held ransom by developers.
'Dissolve Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan'
She also took aim at Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad (below), whom she said must do a better job at distancing himself from the previous BN government.
Khalid, in his capacity as minister, is also the chairperson of Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan, as was his predecessor Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.
The Taman Rimba Kiara development is a joint venture between YWP and the developer Memang Perkasa Sdn Bhd.
Tengku Adnan is accused of having a conflict of interest in the project that was approved in 2017.
This is because of his position as YWP chairperson, and because a business partner of his is a shareholder in companies that hold shares in Memang Perkasa.
Ambiga said the YWP should be dissolved as it had been using a charity as a front for private interests.
"Why do we still have this foundation? Look at how it is disguised.
"They help a few poor yes, but who is the largest beneficiary of the (Taman Rimba Kiara) project? It is the private developer," she said. - Mkini
