GEORGE TOWN: Former Penang Chinese Clan Council (PCCC) chairman Dr Anthony Chang is crying foul over his ban from travelling overseas by the Inland Revenue Board (IRB).
Chang was stopped by the Immigration Department on May 9 at the Penang International Airport, when he was trying to board a flight to Bangkok.
He had been told he had been blacklisted by the IRB, as he owes RM2.4mil in income tax.
“This is totally unfair; the IRB did not send me any notice that I am going to be blacklisted, other than a later dated March 7 saying I need to pay RM2.4mil without any breakdown.”
“Even then, my accountant was in touch with the IRB, and we have fixed an appointment with the department on May 20,” said Chang at a press conference at the Teoh Si Cheng Hoe Tong Clan house here on Monday (May 13).
“All my businesses are in Singapore, and I have been paying income tax in the island state and other than properties and vehicles, I do not have any registered businesses here,” added Chang, who is also the Teoh clan chairman.
Chang was in the limelight two years ago with his dispute on the PCCC building with then-Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on the transfer of the heritage property at 50 Love Lane.
The state said it would transfer the property to PCCC if it could show proof that it was the rightful owner.
The property is believed to be historically connected to a powerful Chinese society in the 1800s called Ghee Hin and was mired in trust problems, as all the trustees died without transferring their duties to the younger generation.
The issue had since been solved, with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow transferring the property to the PCCC last year.- Star
