Dr M: Bersatu will be rewarded with developed country, not positions

Dr Mahathir Mohamad today sought to appease Bersatu members upset at not being appointed to important government positions after Pakatan Harapan took Putrajaya last May.
The Bersatu chairperson said that his party was bound by Harapan's election manifesto to not make any political appointments.
However, he said those who made sacrifices to ensure the coalition's victory in the 14th general election would be rewarded in other ways.
"I am sure many party members are upset that our victory brought them nothing, while other champions and party leaders were given positions like prime minister, deputy prime minister, ministers, and other positions.
"Our sacrifice to achieve victory for our party will eventually bring us something, not directly, but trust that there will be something.
"Whether we get jobs or business opportunities, our children get scholarships to study abroad, and the country being complete with electricity, sufficient water, goods roads, fast rail lines, and much more," he said.
Mahathir was speaking at a Bersatu breaking fast event in Putrajaya.
He said he faced similar complaints when he led Umno, but had similarly told them that they could enjoy the fruits of development if they did not get positions.
Mahathir added that in conjunction with Ramadan, party members should learn to control their desires.
He repeated the message for the new Bersatu members from Sabah – saying that if they really want to sacrifice for race, religion, and country, they would not do anything to ruin Malaysia's image, which has already been tainted as a kleptocracy.
Earlier in his speech, Mahathir announced that 25 division leaders have been appointed in Sabah.
He also announced that Education Minister Maszlee Malik has been appointed to the Bersatu supreme council. - Mkini
