Family of Malaysian on death row in Singapore appeals for govt intervention

Malaysian Pannir Selvam Pranthaman is scheduled to be executed at Changi prison this Friday.
PETALING JAYA: The family of a Malaysian on death row for drug trafficking in Singapore has appealed to Putrajaya to intervene in the sentence, saying he was not given a chance for clemency under Singaporean law.
Pannir Selvam Pranthaman is scheduled to be executed at Changi prison this Friday.
In a statement issued through rights group Lawyers for Liberty, his family said it had done all it could to save him, including submitting a final clemency appeal to Singapore President Halimah Yacob this morning.
“We were stunned when we received the notice of execution just one week before,” it said.
“Both the letter refusing clemency and the notice of execution came together, dated the same day. Obviously, this can’t be right, and Pannir was not given his chance for clemency under Singapore law.
“Neither did the public prosecutor give Pannir the certificate of assistance despite providing information to the authorities. This certificate can save his life and is his entitlement.”
Adding that Panir is a “good person who came from a good home”, the family urged Putrajaya to communicate with the Singapore government and put a stop to the execution.
“We know that in the new Malaysia, our government no longer approves of the death sentence for drug trafficking.
“The Malaysian government is Pannir and our family’s last hope. Please give Pannir and our family a second chance,” it said. - FMT
