KUALA LUMPUR: Former national swimmer Nurul Huda Abdullah has been appointed deputy chef de mission (CDM) II for the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines to assist CDM Megat Zulkarnain Omardin.
The appointment of the 1989 SEA Games Sportswoman was announced by Olympic Council of Malaysia (MOM) president Mohamad Norza Zakaria after chairing the OCM executive board meeting at Wisma OCM today.
OCM had previously announced National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer Ahmad Faedzal Md Ramli as Deputy CDM I.
Mohamad Norza described the three individuals as a solid combination as they all had interesting backgrounds, which would come in handy to the national contingent during the games.
“Megat is the secretary-general of the Malaysian National Silat Association (Pesaka) and former vice-president of OCM, he has extensive knowledge of sports administration. He will be assisted by Ahmad Faedzal, whose name was suggested by the youth and sports ministry, and Nurul Huda has been a very successful athlete in the SEA Games.
“These appointments require careful planning, and when it comes to the SEA Games, it involves exposure for the younger athletes, and they need leaders who understand them and their aspirations,” he said.
Nurul Huda is the best inspiration for the national athletes with a record of 23 SEA Games gold medals.
On another note, Mohamad Norza said former National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Mazlan Ahmad would join the selection committee for the Philippine SEA Games.
Mazlan will replace Dr M Jegathesan, who has commitments abroad.
The committee includes Ahmad Faedzal, NSC director-general Ahmad Shapawi Ismail, former OCM secretary-general Sieh Kok Chi and Mohamad Norza himself. - FMT
