PETALING JAYA: A DAP lawyer has urged authorities to investigate the case of a 16-year-old girl in Sarawak who committed suicide based on a poll on her Instagram on whether she should live or die.
Ramkarpal Singh said the communications and multimedia ministry should investigate the victim’s social media accounts to uncover the circumstances that led to her death.
The ministry, headed by Gobind Singh Deo, is also in charge of the country’s internet authority, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
It was reported that the victim jumped from the top of a shophouse after 69% of respondents asked her to choose “death”.
Sarawak police said she had put up the poll with the question, “Really Important, Help Me Choose D/L”, hours before committing suicide on May 13.
Ramkarpal said the response from her Instagram followers was disturbing.
“How some netizens could have actually condoned this is beyond me,” he added.
“Would the girl still be alive today if the majority of netizens on her Instagram account discouraged her from taking her own life?
“Would she have heeded the advice of netizens to seek professional help had they done so?”
Ramkarpal cited a case in the US two years ago, where a woman was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for encouraging her boyfriend to commit suicide.
“Since attempted suicide is an offence in this country, it follows that abetting one to attempt suicide may be, too,” said the Bukit Gelugor MP. - FMT
