Study finds only 35% of men understand need for verbal consent to sex

PETALING JAYA: A survey by a think tank on sex in Malaysia has found that a mere 35% of its all-male respondents understand that consent for sex entails a verbal agreement from their partners.
The study, carried out in English by the Centre for Governance and Political Studies (Cent-GPS), asked 2,014 respondents in the Klang Valley aged 18 to 30 about their understanding of consent.
Only 35% said that their partners had to verbally agree to sex.
“Disappointingly, the other 65% of male respondents in the Klang Valley incorrectly defined consent as anything other than a verbal ‘yes’ from the female partner,” it said.
Of these, 13% said consent for sex could be ascertained through body language and 4% claimed that sex with their partners was a “given” if they were in a relationship.
Some 30% said consent is given if sex had been discussed before, and 4% equated a lack of objection to consent.
The study also asked respondents about their understanding of sex education, whether their religions permitted it, and whether they could recognise and leave an unhealthy relationship.
It said the results indicated a “slippery” understanding of these topics, with 32% of respondents believing that sex education promotes sexual activity.
“When asked whether their religion allows for sex education, 56% said yes while 36% said no.”
On the topic of protection, 53% said they learnt to use protection from media such as books, advertisements and movies, while 24% said they learnt about it through porn.
“Interestingly, only 27% claimed that they had learnt about protection and its uses through formal education,” the study said.
On unhealthy or obsessive relationships, about 38% said they would stop dating a seemingly obsessive partner while 37% said it would not affect their relationship.
“Around 25% of the respondents were less definitive, hoping to ask more questions, wait, and further assess the situation.”
In terms of racial demographics, 45% of those surveyed were Malay, 31% Chinese, 17% Indian and 7% unspecified.
Cent-GPS said more than half of the Malay respondents said they would continue in an unhealthy relationship compared to 25% of Chinese and 18% of Indians.
It added however that it did not want to identify the reasons for the results.
“Without a doubt, the results point to a higher need for an effective and more in-depth sex education in Malaysia,” it said, adding that a majority of the men surveyed did not understand the true meaning of consent.
“A big segment of men are unable to identify an unhealthy relationship. A big chunk of men believe that sex education promotes unnecessary sexual activity.”
Hypothetically, it said, urban, English-speaking men were supposed to have the most comprehensive understanding of consent, sex education and healthy relationships.
“We fear the results and misconceptions surrounding sex education may possibly be the same or worse in other areas of Malaysia.” - FMT
