All over a massage parlour?

PETALING JAYA: A disgruntled business owner is said to be behind the viral posting of an old video, depicting Pulau Perhentian as a place of vice and wild parties, police said.

The video has garnered attention since it went viral on July 28.

It shows a dancer performing half-naked on the beach, leading viewers to believe that a raunchy fiesta took place on the island recently.

Local authorities have since clarified that the act was recorded in 2017.

Besut OCPD Supt Zamri Mohd Rowi said police believe the video was reposted by a dissatisfied business owner who was not allowed to open a massage parlour on the island.

“We learnt that other businesses and locals were opposed to it,” he said.

Supt Zamri said the uploader had intended to shame the local authorities, including the Besut district council, over its refusal to grant a business permit.

He said investigations showed that the dancer was a transvestite, who was under the influence of alcohol.

“The dancer was not a performer hired for any show organised on the island. In fact, none of the resorts hosted any parties recently,” he said.

Supt Zamri said police, together with the local authorities, would continue to carry out checks on the island for illegal events.

On Friday, it was reported that the police and the Terengganu Religious Affairs Department were called in to investigate the alleged dance fiesta after the video went viral.

State Tourism, Culture and Information Technology Committee chairman Ariffin Deraman said action could be taken if the allegation was found to be true.- Star
