KOTA KINABALU: Education policies should not be abused as a tool for political power, said Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) deputy president Richard Yong We Kong.
In a statement today, he said the latest education policy on the introduction of khat (Malay-Arabic calligraphy or Jawi) in vernacular schools by the Pakatan Harapan government has caused political tensions.
“Even Dong Zong, a non-government education organisation has been dragged into this whirlpool.
“Dong Zong, which is committed to education development and nation-building, should not be dragged into political conflicts and made a target by political enthusiasts,” he said.
Yong said parents are sending their children to school to learn something useful so that the younger generation can earn a living and have a better life in the future.
He said there are many aspects of the education system that need to be improved urgently.
While strengthening the knowledge base of Science and Maths, Yong said other things like basic financial management and improvement of self-confidence can be taught as well.
“In the long run, to protect Sabah from the conflict in Malaya, Sabah should have autonomy to manage its own resources, without interference from the central government.
“With autonomy, Sabah can manage and formulate an education policy that can really keep pace with global advancements,” he said. - FMT
