Ikatan, Berjasa agree to join Umno-PAS in political cooperation

PAS' allies in the opposition bloc Gagasan Sejahtera - Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) and Berjasa - have agreed today to join the bandwagon in its political cooperation with Umno, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.
During a press conference today, Abdul Hadi said Ikatan and Berjasa would be joining the Umno-PAS coalition through their Gagasan Sejahtera coalition.
The Maran MP said both parties had accepted the political cooperation between PAS and Umno, which they formed under the concept of 'taawun siyasi'.
Asked whether the decision also means that Ikatan and Berjasa were ready to join PAS and Umno, Abdul Hadi said: "Yes, the same like how PAS is representing Gagasan Sejahtera and Umno representing Barisan Nasional."

He said this during a press conference after attending Gagasan Sejahtera's Supreme Council meeting in Putrajaya earlier today.
Also present at the press conference were Ikatan president Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir and Berjasa vice-president, Mohd Hazizi Ab Rahman.
Previously, Abdul Kadir had expressed that his party was not interested in joining the Umno-PAS coalition, but would maintain their position in Gagasan Sejahtera.
"As of now we has yet to decide whether to join PAS and Umno in (their) ummah unity (cooperation). We will see first.
"Besides, it is still too early for us to make any decision as PAS' cooperation with Umno is still new, and yet to have any firm direction," Abdul Kadir had said earlier this month.
Today, Abdul Kadir, a former Umno leader, also explained to the media Ikatan's decision to join the coopeation.
He said it was made as PAS was able to accept Ikatan's struggle for the multiracial society in the country.
"The name of our party is Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia, which means multiracial.
"Thus, when we have joined ranks with PAS, it means that party has been able to accept the concept of Bangsa Malaysia in this country, (and that our) political parties will defend the interests of all races and religions," he said. - Mkini
