Police file on Najib sniper case ‘still open’

Pekan Umno said shots were fired at two floors of the building in 2017.
PETALING JAYA: Pahang police have yet to close an investigation of a claim by former prime minister Najib Razak that he was targeted by an unidentified sniper in Pekan, Pahang, in 2017.
“As for now, it is classified as ‘pending until further information’,” the state’s CID chief Othman Nanyan told FMT.
Najib recently alleged that a sniper had fired a shot at his room at the Umno office, to “send a message”. However he said he was not in the room then. Najib is MP for Pekan.
The local Umno division subsequently backed Najib’s claim, adding that the gunman had fired shots at two separate floors of the building.
The division also said that police had investigated the issue for two weeks, but the findings were never revealed.
Today Othman said that police has yet to find the bullet.
“We cannot narrow down who the shooter is, even though we tried various methods, including roping in chemists to the crime scene.”
Najib’s claim elicited a rebuke from Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin who questioned the former’s motive in claiming that he was targeted by an unidentified sniper.
He also questioned as to what the then home minister, deputy prime minister and police had done at the time. “If it was a malicious act, it is not a joke and they should have taken it seriously and ordered the authorities under their jurisdiction to investigate,” Muhyiddin was reported as saying.
The home minister and deputy prime minister at the time was Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is the current president of Umno. - FMT
