Crowd stage protest in London over LTTE-related arrests in Malaysia

Unhappy over the arrests of 12 individuals under charges of purported links to defunct terrorist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), a group staged a demonstration outside the Malaysian High Commission in London yesterday.
The protest, held at 4pm yesterday in Belgrave Square, was attended by nearly 100 members of the Tamil community who claimed that the arrests of 12 people, including two DAP state representatives, G Saminathan and P Gunasekaran, were illegal.
"The actions of the Malaysian government in recognising the LTTE as a threat to Malaysian security is not valid (true).
"The Sri Lankan government itself has acknowledged that the LTTE has been inactive since 2009. Therefore, the Malaysian police's actions are very peculiar," Prasanth Baskaran told Malaysiakini.

Prasant, a spokesperson for the demonstrators, said the Tamil community in London not only opposed the arrests but all human rights violations.
"In fact, we strongly oppose any human rights violations worldwide including those committed against the Muslim community," he said.
The protesters lit candles as a sign of support for the 12 individuals.
They also carried placards claiming that the arrests by the Malaysian police were baseless and illegal.
There was no reaction to the protestors from the High Commission and the protest ended peacefully.
In October, the Malaysian police arrested 12 individuals under the Security Offenses (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) for alleged links to the LTTE.
