Johor MB defends fishermen aid, says will be given next week if lawful

TG PIAI POLLS | Johor menteri besar Sahrudin Jamal has defended the state government's move to give fishermen a RM1,000 special aid starting next week.
"If it doesn't break the law, I will give it next week.
"I am in the state government, so I don't think there is a problem (to give government aid)," he told reporters in Kukup today.
Yesterday, Sahrudin announced that 1513 fishermen from Gelang Patah, Pulqi, Pasir Gudang, Johor Bahru, Tebrau, Pontian, and Tanjung Piai will be receiving the aid in stages starting next week.
Of the recipients, 544 are from Pontian and Tanjung Piai.
He said the aid has been given since 2015 to fishermen in southern Johor affected by development projects.
Sahrudin reiterated today that this should not be regarded as a case of vote-buying.
In a statement today, Bersih argued that although the payment was a scheduled annual payment, it should have been suspended during the campaign period.
"This is to ensure a level playing field," said the group. - Mkini
