Sarawak slams federal govt for poor school repair allocation

Assistant Education and Technological Research Minister Annuar Rapaee says 13 of the 66 projects to repair the dilapidated schools have turned into ‘sick projects’.
KUCHING: The federal government was today taken to task by a Sarawak assistant minister over its poor allocation for repairing dilapidated schools in the state.
Assistant Education and Technological Research Minister Annuar Rapaee said the RM350 million allocated to repair dilapidated schools was actually from Sarawak’s debts paid to Putrajaya.
“They should give us allocations over and above this.”
He told the state legislative assembly that in 2017, RM1 billion had been approved by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to repair 1,020 dilapidated schools in Sarawak.
“We spent RM419 million of this budget to repair 116 schools in 2018,” he said.
However, Annuar said 13 of the 66 projects to repair the dilapidated schools had turned into “sick projects”.
“In 2019, we were only allocated a total of RM100 million by the PH government when we were supposed to be given RM500 million,” he said.
To make things worse, he said, Sarawak was not given a single sen to repair its dilapidated schools in the recent federal 2020 Budget.
Annuar said since the formation of the state education and technological research ministry on May 17, 2017, the state government had spent about RM342 million on its schools’ infrastructure and facilities although education fell under the federal purview. - FMT
