PETALING JAYA: Despite not having any knowledge of Bahasa Melayu, Mandarin and English initially, a Syrian student studying in a Chinese vernacular school managed to score good results in her Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR).
Oriental Daily reported that Natalie moved to Malaysia from Syria nine years ago and studied at SJKC Imbi in Cheras.
Despite failing to achieve her target, she was nevertheless satisfied with her result of 2As and 6Bs.
“I’m most satisfied with my English results because I got an A in comprehension and writing. But I’m disappointed that I got a B for Bahasa Melayu as I was aiming for an A,” she said.
Natalie thanked her teachers for being kind and patient and for helping her to improve her Mandarin.
“I cried a few times today (Thursday). They are students who accompanied me for more than six years. They encouraged me to learn. I can’t bear to leave them.
“Thank you all. Without you, who am I?” she said as she bade her friends goodbye at the end of the school year.
Her mother Izana said she and her husband decided to send Natalie to the vernacular school so that she could learn more languages.
She said their decision was proven to be the right one, adding that she was proud of her daughter’s achievement.
“The teachers at SJKC Imbi are very good because they helped us a lot. She didn’t know Chinese, Malay or English when she enrolled.
“Schools are not just the place to gain knowledge. They also taught her to have good behaviour and to take up interesting hobbies,” Izana said. - FMT
