Unfair to punish PH, Maszlee says to Chinese voters

Maszlee Malik (seated in the middle) with members of the Tionghua community in Kukup, Johor.
KUKUP: PPBM supreme council member Maszlee Malik said it would be unfair for Chinese voters in Tanjung Piai to punish the Pakatan Harapan government which is hardly two years old.
Maszlee said the ruling coalition is trying its best to prove that it was better at administering the country compared to the Barisan Nasional.
“In less than two years, we have done a lot of good. So it would be unfair to punish us,” he told reporters after a dialogue with the Tionghua community here.
Earlier this week, FMT reported that Chinese voters, for the first time in over a decade, appear split on whom to support in the by-election.
If in the past, it was a forgone conclusion that the bulk of Chinese voters would shun any candidate representing Barisan Nasional (BN), a random poll now shows that many are throwing their support behind MCA’s Wee Jeck Seng, the BN candidate who once represented the federal constituency.
Wee lost by just 524 votes in the last general election to the late Md Farid Md Rafik from PPBM.
The Chinese comprise about 42% of Tanjung Piai’s 53,528 voters while the Malays form the majority with just under 60%.
Maszlee said that the ‘rakyat’ needs to give PH a chance and that the coalition will, in five years time, prove that they are better than the BN, adding that the previous administration was plagued with corruption and kleptocracy.
The current administration, the Simpang Renggam MP said, had Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the helm, while ministers were clean and committed.

“So do we want to punish those who want to turn Malaysia into a graft-free nation or back those who are corrupt and have abused their power?” - FMT
