KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has urged property owners not to rent their premises to undocumented migrants, reminding them that such acts are against the law.
It said it had conducted checks at Pusat Bandar Utara here following information from other government agencies such as the immigration department, police and Civil Defence Force that several property owners had been doing so.
A spokesman told FMT that DBKL had then issued a letter dated May 14 to property owners in the area, asking for their cooperation in ensuring that no undocumented migrants live there.
However, he added that the letter was not a form of warning.
“It was merely a notice to homeowners,” he said, adding that property owners did not need to worry about legal ramifications.
“It is a public responsibility to comply with all laws set by the government.”
According to the Immigration Act 1959, property owners who rent their premises to undocumented migrants can be considered as protecting them and liable to legal punishments.
Migrant workers have been in the limelight following the recent spike in number of Covid-19 cases from within the community.
Putrajaya said this week that undocumented workers who test negative for the virus will be sent back to their home countries.
Meanwhile, those who test positive will be sent for treatment at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang, the old maternity ward at Hospital Kuala Lumpur and the old Sungai Buloh hospital. - FMT
