Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid has been appointed as the chairperson of Tenaga Nasional Berhad effective May 12.
Meanwhile, Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman confirmed with Malaysiakini that he has received his appointment letter as the new Prasarana chairperson.
Mahdzir (photo) will replace Ahmad Badri Mohd Zahir who was appointed as the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) chairperson on May 1.
Previously, it was reported that the TNB chair position was offered to Umno deputy president, Mohamad Hassan, who turned it down.
Mahdzir was previously speculated to be in the running as the new Telekom Malaysia chairperson.
He had previously served as energy, green technology and water deputy minister before helming the Education Ministry.
TNB CEO Amir Hamzah Azizah welcomed Mahdzir's appointment, saying the latter had "broad knowledge and exposure of the electric energy industry".
"Given the current difficult period, we believe his leadership will help steer TNB through the challenges and achieve its aspiration to transform the company to be among the top-10 utility companies in the world by 2025," Amir said in a statement.
He also thanked Ahmad Badri for services rendered to the national electricity company.
