Minister: More than 500 cars in 'balik kampung' attempt turned back

Malaysiakini

A total of 508 vehicles that attempted to travel across state lines using an excuse to balik kampung were ordered to turn back yesterday, according to Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Ismail (photo) said those ordered to turn back were among 238,500 vehicles stopped at 146 roadblocks across the country on Day 4 of the conditional movement control order period.
"I would like to remind that roadblocks have started and actions have been taken.
"As of yesterday, the police had exercised their discretion to advise and warn, although actions were taken to order the cars to turn back," the senior minister in charge of security cluster said during a daily National Security Council Covid-19 update press conference in Putrajaya.
Ismail said the government have also authorised police to start issuing compounds beginning tomorrow to those caught flouting the conditional MCO.
The government had previously relaxed interstate travel restrictions for Malaysians stranded at various locations in the country since enforcement of the MCO on March 18.
The temporary permission was granted from May 7 to May 10 and all restrictions on interstate travel have been reinstated until June 9.
On border security, Ismail revealed that as of May 15, a total of 1,408 migrants were arrested for attempted entry into the country via illegal routes on land and at sea.
He said border forces had also arrested 14 individuals linked to attempts of smuggling in the migrants.
Ismail had previously defended Putrajaya's crackdown on undocumented migrants who are already living here, arguing that Malaysia has a right to defend its sovereignty. - Mkini
