Only one-time quarantine for varsity students returning home - minister

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has assured that varsity students intending to return home will only undergo quarantine once.
This comes following a statement by Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), sighted by Malaysiakini, which stated its students will only be allowed to return after a 14-day quarantine and testing negative for Covid-19.
Ismail said students returning to Peninsular Malaysia need not undergo further quarantine once home if they have already done so.
Meanwhile, students returning to Sabah and Sarawak will have to undergo two-week quarantine at designated centres.
As such, he called on parents to be patient and not to worry over the fate of their children.
“Only quarantine once,” Ismail said when contacted by Malaysiakini today.
“Students from the peninsular to Sabah, even to Sarawak, will be quarantined.”
According to the statement by UMS deputy vice-chancellor (student and alumni affairs) Raman Noordin, students must be quarantined before leaving for home.
This was based on the decision by the state Covid-19 command centre.
Ismail had announced on April 24 that higher education students who have been stuck on or off-campus accommodation will gradually be allowed to return to their home towns starting April 27.
However, he said student movement home will be strictly regulated and only involves students returning to green zones if they are not currently staying in red zones.
Green zones are areas with zero recorded Covid-19 infections, while red zones are those with 41 or more cases.
Up to 53,000 students under the Higher Education Ministry's purview will be involved in the exodus.
Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today announced further easing of the movement control order (MCO) from Monday, which will see most businesses and social activities resume, subject to strict conditions.
However, he stated institutions of higher learning will remain closed and interstate travel for the sake of the coming Hari Raya celebrations will not be permitted.
The premier’s address also did not mention the lifting of travel restrictions of students from red zones. - Mkini
