ALOR SETAR: Kedah is expected to have a new mentri besar with PAS' Jeneri assemblyman Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail being touted as possible candidates.
However, PAS appears to be the frontrunner for the coveted position as the party commands the majority of seats in the incoming Perikatan Nasional state government.
The position is likely to be for Sanusi who is also the state deputy commissioner 1 and a seasoned politician.
Sanusi, who cut his political teeth as the political secretary to the late mentri besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak, is expected to make the requisite courtesy call on the Sultan of Kedah in the next few days.
Meanwhile, former state exco member Ku Abdul Rahman is another familiar face in Kedah political scene that was rumoured to be the possible candidate as the state 14th mentri besar.
The 66-year-old quit Umno in 2018 to become an independent before joining Bersatu.
Earlier Tuesday, two PKR assemblymen aligned to former party deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali announced that they are quitting the party with immediate effect.
Azman Nasrudin (Lunas) and Dr Robert Ling Kui Ee (Sidam) said they have lost confidence in the party and have chosen to quit.
The incoming Perikatan state government will comprise 15 assemblymen from PAS, four from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, and two each from Umno and PKR.
With a total of 23 assemblymen, Perikatan will have a solid 10-man majority in the 36-seat state assembly. - Star
