An emotional Sultan Nazrin Shah today led a round of applause in the Perak legislative assembly for frontliners in the battle against Covid-19.
Towards the end of his royal address, the Perak ruler said the state assembly would like to record the highest appreciation of frontliners who sacrificed themselves for the country.
He then stood up and led the 59 assemblypersons for a standing ovation.
The ruler had described the frontliners as heroes.
Earlier in his speech, while paying tribute to various types of frontliners, the ruler appeared to be fighting back tears, his voice choked with emotions.
Sultan Nazrin made special mention of Health Ministry medical staff who were faced with grave risks while performing their duties.
"By God's will, and through their sacrifices, the spread of the virus has been contained, while the vast majority of those infected have been able to recover.
"Although our public health infrastructure is modest, and our medical resources are limited... we nevertheless have professional and experienced health workers in the Health Ministry who are dedicated and committed enough to fulfil the trust and responsibilities thrust upon them.
"They have shown the nation and to her people that they are our most valuable assets," said Sultan Nazrin.
The ruler also thanked the police, military, fire and rescue department, civil defence department, welfare department and other civil servants.
"I would also like to record my appreciation to the respective religious bodies, the private sector, professional bodies, NGOs, local communities and individuals, who have selflessly contributed their energy, service, time and material in this time of crisis.
"Each and every one of them has shown the highest level of patriotism in helping to protect the citizens of our country," he said.
The Perak state assembly will sit for one day today. Sultan Nazrin said that the sitting was held to fulfil legal requirements and no more. - Mkini
