Kedah PKR chief Johari Abdul has confirmed the authenticity of a March 12 letter expressing the party's support for PAS' Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to replace Mukhriz Mahathir as the state's menteri besar.
However, he stressed this was not PKR's current stand.
“Itu cerita lama (old story). That was when Bersatu left (Pakatan Harapan) [...]
“After that, we returned our support to the MB (Mukhriz). And then it was settled,” he told Malaysiakini this afternoon.
Bersatu quit Pakatan Harapan on Feb 23, leaving the coalition with PKR, Amanah and DAP.
Pressed if the letter reflected Kedah PKR’s current stand regarding the MB candidate, Johari answered in the negative.
“No, that was before. That was an old letter,” he reiterated.
Signed by Johari (below), the letter informed the Kedah palace of PKR's support for Sanusi as the menteri besar.
“Taking into account domestic political developments, Kedah has not been spared of the crisis.
“Should the sultan intend to make a decision to nominate an assemblyperson to become the new MB, I represent PKR in stating full support for Jeneri assemblyperson Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor to be made the new MB candidate,” it read.
Following Bersatu’s Harapan departure and entry into Perikatan Nasional (PN), Mukhriz bucked the party line and chose to maintain Harapan as the state government in Kedah.
He and his father - Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad - have been steering the party away from PN and back to Harapan in recent weeks.
Earlier today, Mukhriz was ousted as MB and the state government fell to PN when two assemblypersons quit PKR and declared support for the coalition. - Mkini
