No Merdeka parade for now, says Ismail Sabri

Malaysiakini
With the recovery movement control order due to the Covid-19 outbreak lasting until Merdeka Day on Aug 31, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Ismail Sabri Yaacob anticipates that this year there will be no parades held.
In his briefing from Putrajaya, Ismail responded to a question about the traditional celebration of Malaya's independence in 1957, saying: "At the moment, there are no parades planned."
"Firstly, the parades would involve a large gathering. I believe it would number in the thousands."
"Secondly, from the point of view of social distancing, that would also not be permitted. Not just from the participants in the parade but from those attending.
"The VIP seating area and that enclosed space might be easily monitored but the attendance of the public - let's say at Dataran Merdeka, they will be cramped together and difficult to control.
"For now, there is no permission, there is no parade," said Ismail, who added that the parades were not the only celebratory event held in conjunction with Merdeka Day, citing countdowns and the display of flags as well.
Ismail said the details of what celebrations may be permitted have yet to be discussed and it is likely that Communications and Multimedia Minister Saifuddin Abdullah will be taking charge of this aspect.
