Malaysian film 'Pulanaivu' wows 'em at Toronto film festival

Tamil film Pulanaivu produced by Shaibha Vision bagged the best film award in the crime thriller category at the recent Toronto International Tamil Film Festival 2020.

The film, which is directed by Shalini Balasundram and her husband Sathish Natarajan, was released in November 2019.

Its producer, Shaila Nair, who also plays the protagonist in the film, said that it was an unusual feeling seeing a Malaysian Tamil film being awarded a trophy on the international stage.

"That Pulanaivu is being internationally accepted is an incredible success and rewards the hard work and uniqueness of this crime thriller film.

“This award is very special for us as many other Tamil films around the world are participating in this festival.

"For Pulanaivu to stand out and win the hearts of the jury in Toronto is really very exciting for us as a team," she told Malaysiakini.

Shaila added that the jury for the festival comprised famous film directors from India such as Vetri Maaran and Ram as well as actors Andrea Jeremiah and GV Prakash.

Pulanaivu (which means "investigation") is the story of a woman who holds a high position in the police force and opens an investigation into the death of a private college student.

"Rarely does a female character as the protagonist get attention. So I am proud of this award and it will definitely be a catalyst for our local films to join other international film festivals.

"Congratulations to directors Shalini and Sathish as well as all Pulanaivu actors and crew for this success," said Shaila.

Pulanaivu also won two awards at the 11th Norwegian Tamil Film Festival for best actress and best screenplay under the Tamil Diaspora film category.

Shaila Nair won the best actress award while Shalini and Sathish won the best screenplay award. - Mkini
