What's to discuss, just do it! - Fahmi to deputy minister on free internet

Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil has questioned Deputy Communication and Multimedia Minister Zahidi Zainul Abidin for saying the ministry will look into the possibility of providing free internet or broadband network services at institutions of higher learning in the country.

"Almost all or indeed all institutions of higher learning have free internet for students. As far as I know, the entire University Malaysia campus has this basic infrastructure.

"And if there are any institutions that do not have free internet, why does this still need to be discussed? Just do it!

"What is the problem of this deputy minister actually?" asked Fahmi (above) in a Facebook post tonight.

Zahidi had said earlier today that his ministry wanted to discuss how to provide free internet or Wi-Fi at all campuses of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

"At the same time, we also want it to be extended to other institutions of higher learning in order to reduce the huge expenses that students have to bear, thus helping those who are from poor families," he had said.

Zahidi (photo) added that it was important to strengthen the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) among student leaders as well as students considering the world landscape had changed to digital.

Checks by Malaysiakini found that while there was free internet access on the campuses of the public universities, there were persistent complaints that the service was too slow to be effective.

Earlier this month Zahidi and fellow deputy minister, Abdul Rahim Bakri, had accused University Malaysia Sabah student Veveonah Mosibin of lying in a video clip she made documenting her ordeal with poor internet connectivity in Pitas, Sabah.

The video clip showed her taking an online exam on a tree.

Zahidi and Abdul Rahim had attracted criticism for not acknowledging internet connectivity problems and was accused of bullying Veveonah.

Zahidi later apologised for the confusion caused over the issue. - Mkini
