The Yang di-Pertuan Agong thanked the MPs after Budget 2021 passed the policy stage in the Dewan Rakyat today.
However, the budget is still not out of the woods yet, as it will still have to pass through several more votes during the committee stage, which begins next week.
"Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah expresses his appreciation to all lawmakers who gave their support in approving Budget 2021 at the Dewan Rakyat today," a statement from the National Palace (Istana Negara) states.
The statement was issued by Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin.
The King said the budget is crucial to ensure the well-being of the people and economic recovery, as well as to help frontliners continue the battle against the Covid-19 pandemic.
He also thanked MPs who took up his advice last month for all of them to support the budget.
At the same time, the monarch also said he respects all registered political parties in the country and appreciates the role of MPs in defending the people's welfare.
The budget passed the policy stage today with a voice vote.
An attempt by Amanah's Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar to initiate a bloc vote failed to materialise due to the lack of the required support of 15 MPs. Only 13 MPs stood up in support.
The bill will go to the committee stage next, and MPs will get to debate and vote on each ministry's budget one by one.
Passing the budget is deemed to be a crucial test for the Perikatan Nasional government and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin - due to fluctuating support from Umno.
The King in his statement also expressed confidence that the government is able to administer the country through the various crises it is facing now. - Mkini
