PARLIAMENT | The government will study the need to extend the conditional movement control order (CMCO) until the end of this year if there is a persistent increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.
Special Functions Minister Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof (above) said the CMCO is currently being implemented based on the risk assessment made by the Health Ministry - taking into account the number of positive cases in each area.
"The government will study the need to impose the CMCO until the end of this year if there is an increase in cases.
"At the same time, we need to implement measures to prevent and reduce Covid-19 cases to as few as possible or up to zero cases through the use of the CMCO," Redzuan said in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The CMCO was reintroduced in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya on Oct 14, following a spike in Covid-19 cases.
It was enforced for two weeks, was extended several times, and is currently due to end on Dec 6.
The same order was later enforced in all states except Perlis, Pahang, Kelantan, and Sarawak.
During the closing session of the ministerial debate for Budget 2021, Redzuan also said that certain SOPs were issued for communities under CMCO to break the chain of transmission.
"This SOP is always updated from time to time and improved with a dynamic nature according to the needs of the people," he said.
The Alor Gajah MP also responded to suggestions for salary cuts of 10 to 30 percent to be implemented among ministers and deputy ministers to ease the people's burden during the pandemic.
He said the suggestions, raised by Dr Mahathir Mohamad (Ind-Langkawi), Dr Wan Azizah Ismail (PKR-Pandan), and Mukhriz Mahathir (Ind-Jerlun), had already been done as the government leaders in question donated two months of their salary to a Covid-19 fund.
"If we look, the PN government has not taken a salary for two months. This equates to about 25 percent deduction per year," Redzuan said.
However, two months salary is 16.7 percent of an annual salary, not 25 percent.
"So I think we are very sensitive to the economic situation of the country and we have fulfilled our responsibility to cut the salaries of ministers, deputy ministers, and senior ministers," he added. - Mkini
