Home Ministry to obtain over 2,000 body-worn cameras for cops next year

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is expected to procure some 2,000 units of body-worn cameras for police officers next year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

In a parliamentary written reply, the Home Ministry said the use of body-worn cameras by officers on field operations will avoid allegations of misconduct thrown at the police force and help protect its image.

"The request for the Body-Worn Camera Rolling Plan 1 (RP1) project under RMK-12 for the police Phase 1 will involve the procurement of a total of 2,168 units of 4G body-worn cameras.

"The procurement of the devices are expected to be implemented next year," said the ministry in reply to a question raised by Oscar Ling (PH-DAP) on Thursday (Nov 19).

Ling had asked the Home Ministry to explain its plan to equip each officer with body cameras to avoid accusations of abuse of power and corruption.

The Home Ministry said that the government remains committed to implementing the policy to use body-worn cameras to ensure transparency, reduce complaints and prevent abuse of power or corruption in the police force. - Star
