Kedah to extend free trading area programme to all districts

The Kedah government is planning to extend the free trading area programme to other districts after the first five began implementing it yesterday.

Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said requests were made by other local authorities (PBT) in the state to allow residents in their areas who were keen to trade to be given the opportunity to do so during the implementation of the conditional movement control order (MCO) period.

"We will evaluate the response in these five local authorities and next week, InsyaAllah, we will allow all local authorities so that the people who want to operate businesses can make preparations," he told reporters after the Kedah Legislative Assembly sitting today.

The five PBTs that have implemented the free trading programme are the Alor Setar City Council, Sungai Petani Municipal Council, Langkawi Municipal Council, Kulim Municipal Council and Kubang Pasu Municipal Council.

He said food sellers were required to get typhoid vaccinations before they were allowed to trade in the free trading area.

He also urged the PBTs to give some leeway to foodsellers and fruitsellers to conduct their trade in areas deemed suitable as long as it meets hygiene requirements and do not cause traffic congestion.
