PKR's Subang MP Wong Chen says the picture ahead of the planned vote on Budget 2021 is unclear, citing talks that some Umno MPs will not vote to support it while some opposition MPs may have been persuaded to back the budget in return for MP resources and allocations.
"Rumours are on overdrive that some Umno MPs will not vote and on the other hand, I too have heard rumours of some opposition MPs will support the budget in return for MP resources and allocations."
"Whatever happens, this budget vote will be important to help clear the political fog that started after the backdoor government took power in February 2020.
"The decision today, will clear the air who is actually supporting whom," said Wong in a Facebook post this morning.
He said that while some MPs may be playing a political game of thrones, the outcome of today's vote will have serious repercussions for Malaysian democracy and the people.
"Malaysian democracy will be fully tested today. Can a government continue to claim legitimacy without being challenged with a vote of no confidence?
"This budget vote will essentially answer the question of whether we are going to condone a constitutional dictatorship," said Wong without mincing his words.
Addressing the people in general, he asked if they wanted the PN government of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to continue to rule and manage the Covid-19 crisis.
"After the Sabah election cluster debacle, implementing two separate Covid rules, one for politicians and the other for the people, the crazy, heavy-handed and ever-shifting conditional movement control order (CMCO) rules, and now the latest tak apa (indifferent) attitude to the migrant workers outbreak... do we still believe this backdoor government has the competency to continue to rule us?"
"The budget vote today will make directly and indirectly the above decisions. Hence the supreme importance of the vote today," said Wong.
All eyes are on the Dewan Rakyat today as the PN government will seek the support of a majority of MPs to pass Budget 2021 at the policy stage.
PN could be down three MPs at the moment, giving it just 110 votes against the opposition's 108.
The reduction in votes is due to multiple factors, namely the death of Gerik MP Hasbullah Osman, Kinabatangan MP Bung Moktar Radin being under quarantine, and Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah abstaining from the budget debate.
