Top Glove says ‘in the process’ of closing Meru factories

Top Glove workers are seen exiting the factories in Meru, Klang, on Nov 26, 2020.

PETALING JAYA: Top Glove Corporation said today it is in the process of temporarily closing its factories in Meru, Klang. The company stopped short of confirming that the factories are indeed in operation.

Yesterday, dozens of workers were seen leaving two of the company’s factories in Meru, and bus was seen moments earlier dropping off workers outside the same factory’s gates.

Brief chats with workers mingling outside the factories led to two of them saying they were working at two separate factories.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Senior Minister for Security Ismail Sabri Yaakob had said Top Glove had already closed 27 of its 28 factories in Meru.

Top Glove, the world’s largest medical glove maker, was ordered on Monday to suspend operations in stages at its 28 factories in Meru to allow its workers to undergo screenings and mandatory quarantine to stem a spike in Covid-19 cases.

“Temporary closure of our factories in stages is in progress, in close cooperation with the relevant authorities,” said Top Glove in a statement today.

“This will facilitate the deep cleaning and sanitisation of the premises to ensure the safety and well-being of its people and the surrounding communities, and also enable some maintenance work to be carried out.”

Top Glove workers are linked to the Teratai cluster in Meru, currently the biggest active Covid-19 cluster in Malaysia. Seventeen new cases were reported yesterday in the cluster, which currently has 4,063 cases.

Top Glove said its workers in Meru are also in the process of undergoing mass screening, adding that 80% of its employees had been tested thus far.

The mass screening is expected to be completed by Dec 4.

“Our factories will reopen in stages once our workers have been tested negative, undergone the mandatory quarantine period, and are cleared to work by the relevant authorities,” said Top Glove. - FMT
