Cabinet to receive inter-ministerial note on cabotage issue

PETALING JAYA: A joint note following an inter-ministerial discussion over the cabotage exemption issue will be sent to Cabinet at the end of the month, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said the ministry had given its input during a special discussion on the impact of revocation of cabotage policy exemption following an April 14 Cabinet agreement to hold an inter-ministerial discussion on the matter.

"We have taken the time to explain the details, including how Malaysia does not restrict subsea cable repairs using foreign vessels as long as there are no available local cable repair ships, he said.

He added the time needed to obtain a domestic shipping licence approval had been drastically reduced to as quick as three working days.

"We appreciate the support from our Cabinet colleagues involved in the ministry's reduction of this process during the Perikatan Nasional government.

"The discussion will be compiled and reported in a joint note to Cabinet on April 28," Dr Wee said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (April 20).

The meeting was chaired by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

Dr Wee noted that he was also pleased with the International Trade and Industry Ministry's commitment to engage the shipping industry for their input so their voice was not left out of the discussion.

Also present at the meeting were Finance Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz; Minister in the Prime Minister's Department for Economic Planning Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed; Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah; Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin and Entrepreneurship and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar. - Star
