JOHOR BAHRU: A legal practitioner was arrested at Larkin here this morning on suspicion of cheating by pretending to be the lawyer for the Johor palace.
Johor police chief Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the 51-year-old was arrested at Kampung Dato’ Onn by the commercial crime investigation department, following a police report lodged last month.
He said the man was suspected of deceiving an advertising company by lying about his connection with the Johor royal family.
He was believed to have been paid RM185,062 by the company to instal billboards along the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and the Second Link.
“Checks also found that the suspect had been convicted of between 12 and 17 other offences such as breach of trust, money laundering and offences under the Companies Act,” he said.
The suspect is expected to be charged at the Petaling Jaya sessions court tomorrow.
On a separate matter, Ayob Khan said two businessmen who claimed to be relatives of the Johor royal family had also been charged with fraud in connection with a non-existent land project at Sekakap, Mersing, involving RM2.45 million. - FMT
