Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob has attributed the higher number of sexual crimes in the state to drug use.
State police previously said that 184 sexual crime cases were reported in 2020, 20 more than the year before. These included rape and molest cases.
For domestic violence, 523 cases were reported last year compared to 519 in 2019. Police are investigating whether the Covid-19 pandemic was a contributing factor to the slight increase.
Speaking to the media after an event in Kota Bharu today, Ahmad (above) said the state government believed the reason for the rise in cases was drug abuse.
“Sexual harassment cases can happen anywhere, and the government is trying to curb the problem by raising awareness.
“As for what causes such cases to happen and why they are involved in such activities - we are looking for the reason.
“Sexual harassment problems are actually linked to drug use, and this should be curbed,” he said.
Ahmad shared that the state government was working with the National Anti-drug Agency (AADK) to address drug use problems.
He added that certain authorities had been tasked with conducting studies into the factors causing individuals to develop drug abuse problems.
Ahmad questioned if those who have drug abuse problems had developed the habit when they were in school.
“For example, we can compare between individuals who attended professional schooling and those who attended Yayasan Islam Kelantan (Kelantan Islam Foundation) schools.
“By percentage - which schools had more or fewer students (who were involved in drugs),” he said. - Mkini
