Artist-activist Fahmi Reza has been released from police custody after overnight detention and having his statement recorded over investigations for alleged sedition.
When contacted, Fahmi's lawyer Yohendra Nadarajan confirmed his client's release from Dang Wangi district police station at 5.50pm today.
"Fahmi (above) was released on police bail.
"He had his statement recorded from around noon until about 3pm today," he told Malaysiakini.
Fahmi also shared a photograph on Facebook of himself standing outside the police station with the three-finger salute commonly associated with the Thailand protests and other recent democracy movements.
The artist and activist was earlier questioned for an investigation under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act conducted by the Bukit Aman Classified Criminal Investigation Unit.
Police had applied for a four-day remand order during a hearing this morning but magistrate Nitya Ravindran only granted a one day remand which ended this evening.
Fahmi was detained last night for a jealousy-themed Spotify playlist that was allegedly insulting the Raja Permaisuri Agong Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
Based on the web links provided by Bukit Aman CID chief Huzir Mohamed in a statement late last night, the playlist originally featured a portrait of the queen along with the words “This is Dengki Ke?”.
The playlist featured 101 English and Malay songs by various artists, nearly all of which were jealousy themed. - Mkini
