Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan today said he does not know if seat negotiations with PAS for the 15th general election have been postponed for now or not.
So far, he added, the negotiations are still happening under the Muafakat Nasional parent committee meeting, which happens twice a week.
“I only read in the media, but in the Muafakat parent committee meetings lately, we (Umno) have stated that seat negotiations between Umno and PAS (are still) continuing.
“Let’s say we agree (about the formula to use for) seats that will be contested by each party, and our second formula, we agree that whichever party gets the most votes, the seats in question will be given to that party,” Mohamad (above) told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony for the Bangkit 15 programme in Malacca today, as reported by Bernama.
Yesterday, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang reportedly said that they have sent a representative to negotiate with Bersatu about dividing up electoral seats.
He said their discussions with Umno has been postponed for now as the party is facing internal rifts.
Meanwhile, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said PAS' decision to engage in seat negotiation with Bersatu for the GE15 is being done without the blessing of Muafakat.
Mohamad today said Umno will get clarification from PAS about the matter in the upcoming Muafakat parent committee meeting.
When asked about the current relationship between Umno and PAS, he replied “we are still on good terms".
Mohamad also responded to those who have urged Umno to hold its party elections in June as it was supposed to.
He said it will depend on the current situation as the Covid-19 pandemic is still recording a high number of daily cases.
“Because in an election, it is compulsory for members to attend, but at this time there are some complications because the Covid-19 situation hasn’t abated yet. We have to obey the standard operating procedures (SOPs).
“Like in Rembau (Umno), there are 1,100 delegates. We have to find a hall that can fit 3,000 people to obey the SOP.
“We cannot let only 20 percent attend, otherwise the meeting will not be valid. Those are the problems we are examining now,” he said. - Mkini
