KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is reviewing its decision to allow public and night markets after the number of Covid-19 infections shot back up to over 200 cases today.
Masidi Manjun, the state’s official Covid-19 spokesman, said closing the markets may be necessary to control the spread of the virus.
He said that, as announced previously, the government had banned Ramadan bazaars this year, unlike in the peninsula.
“This is because the cases in Sabah have yet to stabilise. Also, there are several new clusters in the state.
“Considering a desperate need to control the spread of Covid-19 in the state, all local authorities are required to review activities involving night markets, general and weekly markets, tamu (traditional markets), roadside stalls and others similar to them,” he said, in his daily briefing today.
Sabah recorded 202 cases in the last 24 hours, with the bulk of the infections detected in Tawau (58 cases) and Sandakan (46 cases).
Thirty-three of the cases in Sandakan were from two new clusters namely Lorong Megah Jaya and Jalan Labuk 3 clusters. Eleven of the cases in the Jalan Labuk 3 cluster involved students at a hostel.
Sabah now has a cumulative 57,367 infections, with 886 patients still receiving treatment at either hospitals or low-risk treatment centres. - FMT
